I have tender and swollen joints and I suspect it is rheumatoid arthritis. However, I am not sure which specialist I should be consulting. I have been told by some I must see an orthopaedist. Please advise. Vimala, Kotturpuram

Some of the earliest symptoms of the condition are tender, warm, swollen joints and stiffness of joints that is usually severe in the mornings and after inactivity. The right specialist to see is a rheumatologist. There is very little awareness on the speciality and there are not many practitioners. But there are many in private hospitals. You could consult one of them at the earliest. Dr S Rajeswari, Director, Institute of Rheumatology, RGGGH

I have tiny spots on my skin that I suspect is vitiligo. What should I do ? N Vignesh, Alwarpet

First, you need to consult a skin specialist to confirm if it is vitiligo. Vitiligo is the loss of skin colour in blotches and is common in our country. The treatment for the condition depends on the category it falls under. In the case of stable vitiligo, where it persists in just one area, the treatment option of re-pigmentation and punch graft techniques are very effective. It is important to spot it at the earliest for effective treatment. Dr Maya Vedamurthy, Dermatologist
