I am 22 and I have been losing a lot of hair, recently. What could be the reason? Ananya D, Thiruvanmiyur

Today, we see a number of younger women skipping breakfast, which again has a direct impact on hair loss. Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome (PCOS) is prevalent even among 14-year-old girls and it has a direct bearing on hair growth. Other factors include anaemia. They may have normal haemoglobin count, but a ferritin test can reveal a different story. Similarly, calcium deficiency and poor protein intake also contribute to the condition. Dr S Murugusundram, Interventional Dermatologist and Dermato-Trichologist.

My son undergoes blood transfusion every month. I heard that frequent blood transfusion can be a cause for Hepatitis C. How can I ensure he doesn’t contract it? Amritharaju, Triplicane

There are first generation kits available for screening and testing of blood, but some blood banks may be using the kits that are not sensitive enough. Also, the advanced ones are expensive and these banks may not be able to afford them. Ensure your blood bank gives you only screened blood. It is their responsibility to show you proof of the necessary tests done. Choose a bank, even if it’s more expensive. Then, get yourself tested by a simple blood test. Ideally, everyone should, because there ís no knowing when you could have contracted it through an injection, but if you catch it, then those at risk must also get tested. Dr M Hariharan, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Interventional Endoscopist.
