In case of hypothyroidism, apart from thyroid levels, what else should be monitored regularly? Is there any food restriction? Anandhi V, Chennai

It is the TSH level that needs to be monitored regularly, most importantly. However, in case of a swelling in the neck, tests have to be done for goitre. Apart from these, there might be a need to also check the lipid profile for one -off cases. There are no food restrictions and one can eat cooked cauliflower and cabbages once in a while, while there is a belief that these may not be suitable in uncooked form. One can follow a normal diet pattern without restrictions. For women in the age group of 20-50 years, I often say regular periods indicate it is under control, if there are no other symptoms like tiredness and fatigue. Dr Jayashree Gopal, endocrinologist-diabetologist

I have been experiencing hair fall soon after the birth of my first child. What are the reasons? How can I prevent more hair fall? Naveena, Perungudi

Many moms face this hair fall issue soon after childbirth. This is normal and we refer it to as excessive hair shedding. The falling oestrogen levels contribute to this. This is temporary and requires no remedy. Most women see their hair return to normal around their child’s first birthday or before that. If it persists beyond that then you need to see a dermatologist who would probably help you in finding the cause-a low hemoglobin, or low ferritin stores, a low vitamin D or B 12 levels or an underlying hormonal problem to name a few. This would be followed by an appropriate remedy. Dr Deepika Lunawat, Consultant dermatologist Fortis Malar Hospital
