I ensure that my child washes her hand every two hours. Yet, she keeps falling ill. Is there a problem?

    Ananya, Perumbakkam

There is a need to ensure that good hygiene habits such as hand washing are inculcated in the early formative years of children. We must also ensure that children eat a balanced and nutritious diet to help them build better immunity and strength.  ‘Hygiene hypothesis’ is yet another issue among some parents. Hygiene hypothesis is the lack of exposure to infectious agents, symbiotic microorganisms (such as the gut flora or probiotics), and parasites during early childhood, thereby increasing susceptibility to allergic diseases by suppressing the natural development of the immune system. “Going overboard on cleanliness too doesn’t help and it ends up making the children fall sick more often. Moderation is the key.

I feel immense pain in my joints. Could this be due to osteoporosis? I heard even youngsters develop it.

    Anila, Chetpet

Osteoporosis and osteopenia (bone loss), is more in women, sometimes even as young as 25 years. The main reasons are stress, irregular diet and disturbed sleep, coupled with lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle and smoking and alcohol. Specific exercises and alteration in diet and lifestyle can help overcome it. You need to get screened for it before panicking.
