One of my cousins has been diagnosed with acute liver failure. What could have led to it and what are the treatment options? Hema, ValasaravakkamÂ
Acute liver failure is a serious condition occurring in both children and adults. It is caused by certain viral infections, medications or congenital problems, though sometimes the actual cause may never be found. This disease is associated with jaundice (yellowish discolouration of eyes), excessive bleeding tendency and altered consciousness. The disease can damage multiple organs such as the kidneys, brain and lungs. Treatment in the early stages is primarily medical and involves treating the cause (anti-viral treatment, stopping the responsible medications) and supporting the liver and other affected organs.  — Dr Mettu Srinivas Reddy, Senior Consultant in Transplant & Liver Surgery, Institute of Liver Disease & Transplantation, Global Health City
I have heard that the way you breathe can actually help you combat tension. How true is this? I have a very tight working schedule and occasionally smoke a few cigarettes a day. Raviraj, T Nagar
Breathing deeply works against onset of tension and helps combat existing tension. Sit or lie in comfortable position and take slow deep breaths through the nose. Let the air fill from the abdomen up. Then let it out like deflating a balloon. Slow exhalation helps one feel more relaxed. Combine relaxation exercises with soft music. Get adequate sleep on a regular basis. Eat timely meals and stay hydrated. Quit smoking as it increases inflammation and can trigger migraine.  — Dr P Nagaraj, Director & Chief Consultant, Neuro Science & Sports Medicine Rehabilitation, Dr P Nagaraj’s PMN Pranikha Physiotherapy Speciality Sports Medicine CentreÂ
