I develop stye over my eyes very often? I usually apply naamakatti over it and it disappears, but I have been told that it may not be the best solution. Should I see a doctor? — Meenakshi Sundaram, Valasaravakkam

Most often external boils on the eyelids vanish quickly, even before you think of treatment options. However, one must understand the nature of these boils before resorting to home remedies like naamakatti or hot fermentations. There are glands on the external and internal parts of your eyelids. When these get blocked, boils appear on the eyelids. They can be extremely painful. If the boil is on the external side, it is okay to go for the home remedies. But diabetics and children need to get it examined immediately and get it treated by a doctor to prevent the boils from spreading in the eye area. Some of these blocks, say 30-40 per cent, maybe inside. These need medications prescribed by a doctor. A negligible percentage may also need minor surgery.

I have dry cough for over year, it starts when I get stressed. I had taken some medication. Despite that it still continues, to persist. What is your advice? — Ajay S, Tambaram

As such there is no correlation between stress and dry cough. However, if you are relieving yourself from the stress or tension by drinking a cup of coffee or a glass of fruit juice or even smoking, one of these could induce dry cough. Your coffee or fruit juice contains sugar additives that is causing it. Any cough suppressant, as prescribed by a medical practitioner, could offer relief. However, the dry cough could be psychosomatic, a condition caused or aggravated by a mental factor such as internal conflict or stress. Remember, your body has its own way of cleansing germs that occupy the respiratory tract. Coughing is one of the ways.
