What is the Prevention of Blindness Week about?

Since its inception, the National Council for the Prevention of Blindness has been observing the week to stress the need for eye care in India including taking care of the eye, prevention and timely treatment of eye care problems. One can never predict the occurrence of eye problems. From a new born baby, young children to older adults, eye conditions and diseases can strike any time and hence proper care and preventive measures are very important.

    What are its objectives?

The main motive is to create awareness about various factors which cause blindness. People have this misconception that every visually impaired person is born with the disability. But the fact remains that there is a considerable population that loses sight due to poor eye hygiene and protection. So, a nation-wide effort through free eye camps/detection camps, teachers, social workers and health personnel is organised.

How does one protect the eyes during summer?

Common eye problems that one faces when the temperatures soar are allergies, red eyes, conjunctivitis and migraines. Protection and proper eye hygiene can help keep summer eye problems at bay. The easiest way is by wearing sunglasses. Look for sunglasses that transmit no more than one percent UVB and one percent UVA.
