Fact-check on Shashi Tharoor's photo of Nehru and Indira Gandhi

Let's take a look at the true backdrop of the picture of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, shared by Congress Party member Shashi Tharoor on his Twitter.

Keeping in mind the recent 'Howdy Modi' event in USA, Tharoor shared an old picture of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi on his Twitter handle. His photo caption stated that the photo was taken in 1954 when the two leaders went to the US. Tharoor captioned the photo, "Look at the hugely enthusiastic spontaneous turnout of the American public, without any special PR campaign, NRI crowd management or hyped-up media publicity."

On examining the photograph posted by Shashi Tharoor, it is confirmed that the photo was taken in 1955 when Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi made a round trip to Russia.

Shashi Tharoor’s post has gone viral on Facebook and Twitter. Shashi Tharoor, who later found out that his information was false, he took to Twitter to respond: "Even if so, it still doesn’t alter the message: the fact is that former PMs also enjoyed popularity abroad.” 

Tharoor also posted another photograph of Jawaharlal Nehru, taken in 1949, during the latter's visit to the US. Tharoor captioned it, "A large crowd of people gathers at the University of Wisconsin to listen to a speech by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in November 1949." He posted a series of tweets to back his act of falsely shared information. All his tweets affirmed that old leaders enjoyed as much popularity as Modi in abroad.

It is vital for significant political personalities like Tharoor to fact-check a picture or information before they take it to a public forum.
