These are our favourite smartphones from all those that we checked out for this column in 2019, in no particular order:

Vivo S1: One of the best looking devices you can buy under Rs 20,000. The S1 debuted in two striking colour options — Skyline Blue and the Diamond Black with golden accents and textured diamond patterns. (Rs 17,990)

Real Me X2 Pro: One of the most formidable smartphones under Rs 30,000 with a stunning a 6.5-inch (2400 x 1080 pixels) Super AMOLED display (with a 90Hz refresh rate). The robust battery (4000 mAh) with Super VOOC charging powers your battery from 0 to 100 per cent in 35 minutes flat. (Rs 29,999)

ASUS 6Z: Equipped with a motorised flip cam that doesn’t just keep the display bezel-less but also ensures that your selfies look as sharp as images shot on the rear cam mode. This dual cam set up blends a 48MP primary shooter with a 13MP ultra-wide lens.(Rs 31,999)

OnePlus 7T: The 7T’s smooth display with a 90Hz refresh rate set this apart and then there’s speed, a given for OnePlus devices, especially one with a best of breed Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor. (Rs 37,999 onwards)
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+: It was a tough pick between Samsung’s two major flagships but the Note 10+ edged the Galaxy S10+ with a gorgeous 6.8-inch display and a versatile triple rear cam with video bokeh. The S-Pen, Samsung’s proprietary stylus, added a whole new set of tricks. (Rs 79,999 onwards)
Black Shark 2: This one’s for hardcore gamers — powered by the zippy Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with two hardware options — 6/128 GB and 12/256GB.  The device also features an in-display fingerprint scanner, direct touch liquid cooling system 3.0 and dual-camera optics.
(Rs 34,999 onwards)
Google Pixel 3a XL: Arguably the best smartphone shooter under Rs 40,000, especially in lowlight where Google’s proprietary NightSight totally aces it. It’s also a showcase of a pureplay Android experience with the latest OS updates. (Rs 34,999)
iPhone 11 Pro: Apple’s 2019 trio of iPhones made huge leaps in photography. They became the first iPhones with a wide-angle camera lens and also totally aced lowlight. The 11 Pro also addressed a constant crib for most iPhone users — battery life and then there was the bolder OLED display that packs 458 Pixels per inch. (Rs 99,900 onwards)
Huawei P30 Pro: Among our favourite smartphone cams of the year and marked another successful collaboration between Huawei and Leica. The quad rear cam that combines four lenses including a 40MP primary lens and an 8MP periscope lens that allows you to effectively shoot up to 10X with near loss-less zoom. (Rs 71,990)

OPPO Reno 10X Zoom: The swivel front cam (OPPO calls it a shark fin rising selfie cam) was a clever workaround to push the screen: body ratio to 93 per cent. It’s the 10X zoom capabilities — the rear cam blends three lenses, that grabbed our attention. (Rs 39,990 onwards)
