Tech Next: Mobile phones get faster and smartwatches turn affordable
The flagship killer. That was the moniker that OnePlus devices made popular with their value for money proposition coupled with a great feature set. The brand’s 2019 flagship — the OnePlus 7 Pro takes the brand into new territory both in terms of its specs and price tag. It’s a major leap forward for the OnePlus brand and it begins with the premium design language.
Chennai
The OnePlus 7 Pro is all glass and boasts of a refined design language. We particularly like the Nebula Blue colour variant that we reviewed. The device sports a gorgeous 6.67-inch display (1440 x 3120 pixels / 19.5:9 aspect ratio). The colours are vivid; it packs a whopping 516 pixels per inch and stretches the screen: body ratio to 93 per cent. OnePlus calls this a Fluid AMOLED touchscreen and it features a 90 HZ refresh rate that brings a rare fluidity to your device especially when you’re browsing the web. It’s one of the best displays on a smartphone and the large size ensures its ready for all your binge watching.
It’s a heavy device though. Part of its 206-gm heft can be attributed to its heavy-duty battery (4000 mAh). The good thing is you won’t reach out for your charger in a hurry. And then there’s dash charging — OnePlus’ custom fast charging solution. Just like all its predecessors, the OnePlus 7 Pro is seriously fast. Whether you’re a serious gamer or multi-task a lot, this device powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor along with a choice of 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM is always up to the task. The other big improvement is the rear camera. The device features a triple rear cam that includes a 48MP primary lens and an ultra-wide lens while the 16MP pop-up front cam shoots sharp selfies. Camera results were excellent in our tests and a big improvement over the OnePlus 6T.
The OnePlus 7 Pro marks a new chapter for OnePlus as it takes on premium flagships. The phone lacks some of the features found in pricier devices like wireless charging and it’s not water-proof. This one deserves your attention for its brilliant display, dependable camera and speed, the one thing OnePlus always delivers on. (From Rs 48,999 onwards)
Lenovo Ego: Lenovo adds an interesting and competitively priced wearable to its large product portfolio. Ego, the brand’s latest smartwatch might look like a regular digital wristwatch, but includes a host of useful features that complement active lifestyles.
The form factor is ideal for those users who are not yet ready to take the smartwatch or activity tracker plunge. Part of that appeal stems from its battery life — an impressive 20 days. The 1.6-inch monochrome display is water resistant. Lenovo Ego is compatible with both iPhones and Android devices with its own companion App. It’s range of fitness-focused features include heart-rate tracking and sleep monitoring. The watch also offers notifications for texts, calls and even social media updates. (Rs 1,999)
