CHENNAI: The State government on Sunday informed that similar to Myanmar and Thailand, a set of Tamil techies are also trapped in Cambodia and the rescue operation is underway. The plight of youth detained illegally in Myanmar and Thailand by fraudulent IT companies was reported by DT Next on October 6.

“The State government is in contact with the Indian Embassy in Cambodia to rescue the Tamil youngsters and to bring them back. To speed up the rescue operation the public is asked to provide the mobile numbers of the persons or the companies in which they are working,” the government said in a release.

The state government has provided three numbers- 9600023645, 8760248625 and 044-28515288 for the public to contact. The techies from Tamil Nadu who were recruited to work as software professionals in the southeast Asian countries of Myanmar and Thailand were forced to work in illegal activities such as spamming and when they refused they were tortured.

When reports of such illegal captivity and torture were reported the state government plunged into action and rescued 13 Tamil techies from Thailand. Following their rescue, the state government has now obtained reports that a group of techies are under the illegal captive of a mafia gang in Cambodia.

A Pudukkottai man earlier rescued from Cambodia had told DT Next that there are around 400 Indians languishing in the custody of the gang there.
