CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) predicted heavy rain for several districts of Tamil Nadu for the next three days due to upper air circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal adjacent to northern Sri Lanka. Additionally, the maximum temperatures in Chennai is likely to reduce due to the downpour in the evening hours.

"Due to the upper air circulation prevailing in the Southwest Bay of Bengal adjacent to northern Sri Lanka, at least 25 districts of Tamil Nadu - Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Tiruchy, Dharmapuri, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Vellore, Ramanathapuram, the Nilgiris, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, Krishnagiri, Tirupur, Kallakurichi, Tirupattur and Mayiladuthurai are likely to receive heavy rain for the next three days," said a senior RMC official.

As far as Chennai is concerned, some areas are expected to get moderate rain along with thunderstorm activity during the evening hours for the next 48 hours. The rain may bring down the maximum temperature in the city.

On Sunday, the temperature recorded 32 degree Celsius and 34 degree Celsius at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam stations respectively. The official stated that the maximum temperature is likely to be reduced by two - three degree Celsius than normal.

"Wind convergence likely to trigger intense thunderstorms in many interior places of Tamil Nadu with Tiruchy and surrounding areas likely hotspot for 24 hours. Coastal areas like Chennai may see light to moderate rains continue influenced by the easterliest," tweeted an independent weather blogger.

According to RMC, during the last 24 hours. The highest amount of rainfall recorded in Ranipet and Thanjavur is 9 cm each, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Ramanathapuram 6 cm each, Perambalur 5 cm, Tiruchy, Tiruvannamalai and Salem recorded 4 cm each.
