COIMBATORE: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar on Sunday said that construction of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai will be over by 2026.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over a party meeting in Dharmapuri, Pawar said that construction of AIIMS in Madurai was disrupted due to COVID-19 spread. “The Centre has sanctioned Rs 1,977 crore after doing a re-assessment of the project. Works for issuing tenders are underway,” she said.

Further, Pawar said that MBBS admissions were made temporarily in Government Medical College and Hospital. “This means the AIIMS-Madurai is already functional. Its works will get over completely by 2026,” she said.

The Minister accused the state government of not giving due credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in ads of central government funded projects. “It is rather unfortunate that there is no mention of the funding aspect also. The Centre has sanctioned Rs 24 crore to Tamil Nadu to create awareness on projects of hygiene,” she said.
