CHENNAI: The much-awaited appointments of lecturers in state-owned polytechnic will begin shortly, as the state government has accorded sanctions to fill more than 1,000 vacant faculty posts to teach various diploma courses.

At present, a total of 51 government and 34 government-aided polytechnic colleges were functioning and catering to the needs of more than 35,000 students, who were admitted from across the state.

A senior official from the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) told DT Next that the appointment will be made to take diploma course classes in 15 disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation and Control, Computer Science, Information Technology, Production, Textile Technology, Printing Technology, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Modern Office Practice.

He said that the DOTE has requested Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) to fill up 1,060 vacant posts of lecturers in government polytechnic colleges and special institutions in 15 subjects.

“Accordingly, the board has conducted computer-based test for 1,060 posts in December 2021 and published its result in July 2022,” he said adding the certificate verification was conducted for the candidates immediately besides publishing the provisional list.

Pointing out that out of 1,060 vacancies, the TRB has selected candidates for 1,030 vacancies, he said a total of 26 posts have been withheld for communal rotation and four posts have no eligible candidates. “Of the 1,030 candidates, five candidates have been withheld by the board,” he said.

“Accordingly, the government, in its order, has directed to appoint as many as 1,025 persons, who were selected by TN Teachers Recruitment Board, as lecturers in government polytechnic colleges and special institutions on a temporary basis,” he added.

Stating that the appointment of polytechnic vacant lecturers’ posts should have been done in 2018-2019 itself, the official said, however, due to technical issues and subsequent COVID-19 lockdown, the recruiting process could not take place.

The official further said as the government has introduced a few new courses in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, more lecturers would also be recruited shortly.
