COIMBATORE: A day after NIA raids on Popular Front of India establishments, Coimbatore was tense after string of incidents of attacks on vehicles owned by various Hindu outfit functionaries. Some of them came under petrol bombs attacks on Friday.

In Pollachi alone, two cars and two auto rickshaws owned by three Hindu outfit functionaries were targeted by miscreants early on Friday morning. BJP’s unorganised wing district secretary Ponraj found his car parked in front of his residence at Palaniappa Lay Out in Kumaran Nagar damaged in the morning.

In the same neighbourhood, the glass panes of two autos of Saravanakumar, a Hindu Munnani functionary was shattered, while a car of BJP functionary Siva Kumar was attacked. Further, a petrol bomb was hurled on the load vehicle of RSS functionary Velliangiri in Pollachi. Police seized an axe and petrol bombs in these places of attack.

Coimbatore Superintendent of Police V Badrinarayanan inspected the places of attack and assured action.

In Coimbatore, two unidentified bike borne men poured petrol on a car parked outside the house of Thiyagu (35), a member of Hindu Munnani from Kuniamuthur on Friday around 1.45 pm and set it on fire. However, the family members acted swiftly and doused the fire.

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan said four companies of Tamil Nadu Special Police and two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed in the city. There are 100 cops in each company. Sporadic incidents of attacks were reported in other Western districts too.
