VELLORE: A homeless woman delivered a healthy girl baby on the platform adjoining the Vellore south police station in the early hours of Saturday.

Vellore south station head constable Ilavarasi reported for duty at 2 am and heard a woman crying.

When she went to inspect, Ilavarasi found a homeless woman who was screaming in pain. She immediately called for help, but before her colleagues could arrive, the woman delivered a healthy girl baby without any aid. Ilavarasi called for an ambulance through and sent the mother and baby to the nearby government taluk hospital. And from her own funds, she provided all the necessities for both.

Enquiries revealed that the homeless woman, Sahana, is from Andhra and that her husband forced her to have a baby.

Police registered a case and investigations have begun.
