TIRUCHY: Three persons, including secretary of the cooperative society, were arrested in Kumbakonam on Wednesday on charges of burning official documents to abolish the evidence of their irregularities.

On September 11, a sudden fire broke out at the Agriculture Cooperative Society at Govindapuram near Kumbakonam and the fire personnel doused the flames while many documents related to accounts were reduced to ashes. Tiruvidaimaruthur police registered a case.

The police found that Baskar (48), the secretary, Ravikumar (29), the employee in the society and Sampantham (45), brother-in-law of Baskar had torched the documents.

Further investigations revealed that both Baskar and Ravikumar had been jointly involved in a series of irregularities in the society and to escape action, they had conspired to destroy the evidence and thus they torched the documents.

Subsequently, Tiruvidaimaruthur police registered a case against the trio and arrested them.

The Cooperative Society officials are also conducting a departmental inquiry.
