Police sub-inspector arrested under Pocso Act

CHENNAI: A sub-inspector with the Chennai Police was on Wednesday arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for alleged sexual harassment of a minor girl, four years ago.

Police said that the victim is the daughter of the woman with whom the policeman was in an alleged extramarital relationship.

On Wednesday, after investigations, Chennai police arrested the sub-inspector, Pandiyaraj based on a complaint from the girl.

Investigations revealed that Pandiyaraj began an extramarital relationship with a woman six years ago. During the two-year period, he was in a relationship with the woman, he often sexually harassed the woman’s daughter, who was 13-year-old then, police sources said.

After the relationship got estranged, the woman moved with her daughter to a different neighbourhood.

The sub-inspector who is attached to the VIP-escort wing had recently come across the young girl and started harassing her, while she was on her way to college.

Based on the complaint, the police arrested Pandiyaraj under the Pocso Act on Tuesday and remanded him in judicial custody.

In another incident, a 20-year-old youth was booked under the Pocso Act for eloping with a minor girl under the pretext of marrying her.
