TIRUCHY: Volunteers deputed for the ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ Scheme staged a protest in Thanjavur and submitted a petition on Monday to the Collector to regularise their job.

The ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ Union led by district president Amutha Mary came to the Thanjavur Collectorate and submitted a petition in which they stated that around 11,000 persons were deputed in the scheme as volunteers across the state.

The scheme was a huge hit among the people as the volunteers have been executing a marvelous work. “Though an incentive of Rs 4,500 has been given for two hours duty, we have been deployed in various government activities, including medical camps and so we have been discharging our duty as the regular staff. So we demand the government to regularise our employment and provide timeline salary and fix duty hours,” they said in the petition. They also demanded to provide them with identity cards, TA, food allowance and other facilities provided to the regular employees.
