CHENNAI: As it was done for engineering aspirants, the Tamil Nadu government has also included ‘employability skills’ as a subject in the revamped curriculum of vocational courses in the state-run institutions, according to the latest industrial requirements.

Though the School Education Department had already introduced a new syllabus for students in Classes 11 and 12 in science and arts courses for the 2018-2019 academic year, the curriculum was not developed for candidates pursuing vocational courses.

A senior official told DT Next, “There’s an immediate need to improve the quality of education for aspirants who want to pursue vocational courses after they complete higher secondary. That’s why the revamped syllabus was released by the TN Skill Development Corporation and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).”

The official added that revamping was done in subjects like basic mechanical engineering, electric engineering, electronics engineering, textiles and dress engineering, nursing, agricultural sciences, office management, and secretaryship with typography and accountancy.

“However, from this year, the subject ‘employability skills’ will be selected by students who’d pursue all these revamped courses,” he said. “Teachers will be given separate training so that they can equip students,” the official said.
