COIMBATORE: Torrential rains poured widespread trouble in Western districts flooding low-lying houses, inundating a hospital and triggering mudslides on ghat roads. Heavy rains that lashed Namakkal district overnight had inundated several wards in Rasipuram Government Hospital on Monday.

Patients admitted in the maternity and women wards were in for a rude shock as knee deep water surrounded their cots.

Left in a sorry state of affairs, the relatives of the patients were forced to carry them, while shifting to different wards.

Namakkal Collector Shreya P Singh inspected the evacuation of stagnant water and assured that steps would be taken to ensure that the hospital is not inundated in the coming days. She also visited a government school in Kokkarayanpettai as its premises turned into a pool of water.

Torrential rains caused widespread damages in The Nilgiris as mudslides were reported in at least 10 spots on the Kalhatty Lake.

Boulders rolled down near KNR Nagar on Coonoor-Mettupalayam National Highways disrupting vehicle movement. A few houses were damaged in Azhagar Malai village near Ooty and tree falls were reported across the district.

Vehicle movement between Gudalur and Masinagudi was suspended as water flowed over the causeway due to flooded Moyar River. A calf elephant, which was trapped in the gushing waters in the river was rescued by the Forest Department near Mavanallah.

In Erode, 170 persons from more than 40 families were caught unaware during night as their houses in Karkkampalayam, Adi Dravidar Colony and Kilakku Valavu in Modakurichi taluk were inundated due to copious rains. Officials of the revenue department evacuated and shifted them to a government school in Pudur panchayat.

In Krishnagiri, eight persons, including three women and three children were rescued with great effort by the fire and rescue personnel as they got trapped in their flooded house construction site near Hosur. They were trapped as water overflowed from the nearby ‘Sakkarai’ lake.

Meanwhile, the Cauvery River continued to be in spate as 1.30 lakh cusecs has been discharged from the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur following heavy inflow.
