MADURAI: The weather department forecast heavy rain in southern districts, including Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, for the next few days.

Following the alert, administrations of the three regions have made all necessary arrangements to handle the situation.

Tirunelveli Collector V Vishnu on Monday said the district administration has set up a control room and people could either dial ‘1070’ or ‘0462-2501012’ for any rain-related assistance. People could inform about inundation and other problems to get remedial measures, the Collector said.

In Kanniyakumari district, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea and 12 multipurpose evacuation centres are in place. Nine interdepartmental teams in each of the blocks have been deputed to monitor the situation and render assistance, if required.

Tenkasi Collector P Akash, when contacted, said 54 relief shelters have been arranged in the district and taluk-wise inter-departmental zonal teams have been monitoring the situation. All falls in Courtallam have been closed and people have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

Madurai Collector S Aneesh Sekhar said over the last few days, the district received good amount of rainfall, which also caused damage to 25 houses, uprooted 30 trees and left around hundred electricity poles damaged. Further, he told reporters that 33 inter-departmental teams have been engaged in keenly monitoring the rain situation and also water bodies to ensure safety.
