Gang attacks jeweller in Nellai, flees with 4.5 kg gold

According to police, Mydheen Pichai, aged around sixty was returning home after closing his jewel shop located at Veeravanallur on Monday around 9.45 pm. Meanwhile, an armed gang of three intercepted and suddenly attacked the jeweller and fled the scene after snatching away a bag containing jewels weighing around 4.5 kg.

Madurai: A gang of three reportedly attacked a 60-year-old jeweller near Veeravanallurin Tirunelveli district on Monday night before fleeing with a bag containing 4.5 kg of gold jewels.

According to police, Mydheen Pichai, aged around sixty was returning home after closing his jewel shop located at Veeravanallur on Monday around 9.45 pm.

Meanwhile, an armed gang of three intercepted and suddenly attacked the jeweller and fled the scene after snatching away a bag containing jewels weighing around 4.5 kg.

Mydheen suffered injuries below his right ear in the attack by the gang. The victim was then rushed to Cheranmahadevi Government Hospital, where he received six stitches. Mydheen usually walks to his house, which is located around 150 metres from his jewelry shop.

The gang must have keenly monitored his movements and hatched a plan to rob the gold, sources said.

Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police P Saravanan and Veeravanallur police inspected the spot and held inquiries.

The SP said that three special teams have been formed to investigate and nab the culprits. Though it is alleged that three persons were involved in the waylaying of the jeweller, the SP pointing to a CCTV footage lifted from the area said only one person was seen committing the crime.

However, police are combing the CCTV footage thoroughly to find out whether one or more persons were involved in the robbery, the SP said.
