Farmers stage hunger strike opposing Mekedatu project
A section of farmers from Thanjavur staged a hunger strike on Friday against Karnataka’s Mekedatu dam project demanding the Union government to take steps to stop the project.
TIRUCHY: The hunger strike is part of series of protests called by the confederation of organic farmers associations from Delta region, who have been condemning Karnataka government for allocating Rs 1,000 crore for the Mekedatu dam project despite the Cauvery Tribunal order.
The protesters reiterated that the Mekedatu dam project is a serious threat to farmers in Tamil Nadu who are dependent on the Cauvery for both irrigation and drinking water needs. They said that the Karnataka government has been intentionally planning to construct a dam at Mekedatu to avoid giving water to Tamil Nadu.
The members sought the Centre to immediately intervene and direct Karnataka to drop the project. They also demanded the BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu to put pressure on Karnataka Chief Minister to withdraw the project.
