CHENNAI: Accordingly, the performance of more than 3 lakh teachers in State-run schools will be sought through a new online tool recommended by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Performance indicators are specific activities that are required to be performed by a teacher inside and outside the class to be observed and assessed.

A senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next that the proposed assessment process will help the teachers identify their strengths and weaknesses, thereby, motivating them to improve their performance which will ultimately help to achieve the objectives, such as schools’ improvement and accountability of teachers.

Each performance indicator is rated on a four-point scale ranging from 1 to 4 indicating the levels of performance. "The four points include below satisfactory performance, satisfactory performance, effective performance and exceptional performance," he added. Pointing out that teachers should provide evidence or reason for their rating against each such indicator, he said "if specific pieces of evidence are not available, the teacher should mention the reason, why it was placed at that particular level".

On the guidelines issued to the headmasters, the official said the self-assessment data submitted by the teachers should be tabulated and analysed for identifying the areas and themes for future in-service programmes for teachers.
