Health Minister Ma Subramanian and Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy inaugurated the camp.

The Health Minister said Villupuram district has the highest number of vaccinations so far and the drive is likely to strengthen the coverage.

The first 11 mega drives covered 2.06 crore people. At least 78.35 per cent of the State’s population has taken the first dose and 43.86 per cent has completed the inoculation.

“More than 78 lakh people in Tamil Nadu have not got their second dose. These camps are being held at approximately 50,000 locations across the State (1,600 places in Chennai),” he said.

Health Minister added that various restrictions have been imposed at the Chennai International Airport as several countries have reported a surge in cases of the Omicron variant. “Measures have been taken to monitor and isolate foreigners, especially those coming from South Africa, China, Kosovo, Hong Kong, Brazil and Italy, and to isolate them if symptoms are found. Steps have been taken to ensure that everyone from South Africa is isolated and monitored regularly,” he said.

The Minister also inspected the mega drives at Velachery, Perungudi, Chemmancheri and Taramani. He also inspected flood damages in the nearby localities.
