The Election Commission's secretary general Umesh Sinha during his visit to Chennai on December 22 announced postal ballots for aged and physically challenged on the account of poll preparedness. This measure, he said, could reduce crowding in booths and also safeguard the vulnerable in the midst of a pandemic.

In its plea, DMK alleged that since the collection of postal ballot votes is entrusted to the booth officers, the mechanism lays bare to irregularities.

The Madras High Court sought answer for DMK's concerns from the EC in four weeks while denying DMK's request to issue an interim order against the postal ballot system and adjourned the hearing.
