Addressing a People Gram Sabha meeting at Avalivanallur near Valangaiman, the Leader of Opposition said, the response for the meetings from the members of the public, especially women, have been increasing. “This shows how women feel secure with the party as Kalaignar had introduced a series of programmes for their upliftment,” Stalin said.

“Kalaignar was the person who introduced 33 per cent reservation for women in the local body administration and he was the person who introduced various other developmental projects like monetary assistance for pregnant women and destitute women and marriage assistance schemes,” he added.

Stating that the Women Self Help Group scheme was introduced by Karunanidhi in 1989 at Dharmapuri for the first time, Stalin said, Karunanidhi was very particular about the self-confidence of the women and wanted to ensure them to lead a self-respect life without depending on anyone.

Stalin charged that the AIADMK is least bothered about Women Self Help Groups since it was introduced by DMK and the women who approach banks for loans are not treated respectfully. “Once DMK comes to power, a separate monitoring committee would be established to oversee the fund release and the activities of Women Self Help Groups,” Stalin stressed.

Symbol issue: Duraimurugan hints at compromise with MDMK, VCK
The DMK might not be as adamant during the ensuing Assembly polls seat sharing negotiations with allies as it was during Lok Sabha polls. DMK has already expressed its willingness to be flexible this time.
An indication of it was evident from the statement of its general secretary Duraimurugan, who was not averse to a few of its allies insisting on contesting in their own independent symbol.
Duraimurugan has subtly ‘accepted’ the stand of allies MDMK and VCK that they would only contest in independent symbols. Speaking during the ‘People’s Gram Sabha’ meeting in Vellore, Duraimurugan sought to know what was wrong in the party’s stand. Responding to a query, Duraimurugan said that each party has a policy and what was wrong in parties demanding an independent symbol.
His opinion comes in the backdrop of rumours that the DMK was adamant on persuading allies to contest in the “Rising Sun” symbol to achieve its target of winning 200 Assembly seats.
A DMK senior unwilling to be quoted admitted that there was no second thought in the 200 seat target, based on which the “mission 200” campaign was designed. However, the DMK senior admitted that they cannot afford to be adamant like 2019 as Assembly election would be a matter of identity and pride for the allies too. “Probably, a few minority parties could oblige, if we insist. But, parties like MDMK and VCK might not be obliging this time,” a senior DMK functionary said, quickly adding that they would be less generous in seat numbers if they hold their ground on symbol issues.
