The wrong transfusion happened when the victim, a pregnant woman, from Sattur, Virudhunagar district, needed blood. The pregnant woman was diagnosed with anaemia in a private hospital in Sattur and hence she was advised to undergo blood transfusion. However, it was fortunate that the victim’s baby tested negative for HIV in Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital in July last year.

Citing it as a gross negligence, several petitioners moved the court seeking intervention to direct the government to provide adequate compensation to the victim.

The court ordered the government to pay Rs.25 lakh as compensation and construct a house for the woman. Earlier, the court also directed the government to provide suitable job for the victim.

Meanwhile, the victim appeared before a Division Bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and B Pugalendhi through video call on Tuesday and said doctor advised her to have nutritious food and fruits and claimed that she could not afford to buy owing to her poor condition.

The bench, after hearing, directed the government to provide monthly assistance of Rs 7,500 to the victim.

The state should also consider providing suitable job to the victim.
