Re-counselling for 60 candidates of 7.5 pc quota: State

The apprehension of government school students who missed out on admission to private medical colleges owing to the State’s late announcement of it taking up the responsibility of footing their bill has come to an end with the government informing the Madras High Court that it has decided to permit all the 60 students coming under the 7.5% quota to participate in the re-counselling.

Recording Advocate General Vijay Narayan’s submission in this regard as well as the preference being given based on the marks secured by the candidates in NEET, Justice Anand Venkatesh said, “A clarity has been attained with regard to filling up of the reverted seats from the All-India Quota for those students coming under the 7.5% quota, only due to the filing of writ petitions and the orders passed therein.” Pointing out that there may be many other reasons for students falling under this quota to have opted out at the time of selection, he said, “The petitioners having approached this court and sought for relief must naturally reap the fruits of their efforts. Admittedly, the petitioners have also been kept in the waiting list. Therefore, they must get the preference at the time of re-counselling.” He also directed the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department and the director of Medical Education to proceed further with the re-counselling for the students.
