Vellore Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram visited the lake and also the Chettykulam and Erthangal lakes nearby on Tuesday morning as all of them were swelling. But, late in the evening he was informed that there was a minor breach in the outflow location which if not attended to could widen and cause major damage to adjoining Gudiyattam town.

When word of the breach spread to Gudiyattam town, residents were initially frightened of the consequences as they had witnessed nature’s fury when the Kaundanya flowing through the town washed away three persons some time ago. However, Shanmuga Sundaram accompanied by DRO J Parthiban and Gudiyattam sub collector Sheikh Mansoor rushed to the spot, inspected it and immediately ordered that 500 sand bags be placed on the spot to prevent widening of the breach.

Shanmuga Sundaram also ordered that water from various channels which flowed to the Nellorpet Lake be diverted to the outlet channels of the Mordana dam.

Officials of the revenue, PWD, rural development, police and fire and rescue services ordered that a round the clock watch be kept on the reservoir while public were also barred from visiting the facility. Shanmuga Sundaram later assured the gathered locals that the danger was past as the breach had been plugged. Nellorepet, Puthur and Samandipuram areas of Gudiyattam town would have been inundated if the breach had not been checked on time.

Pier of bridge across Ponnai river erodes, traffic diverted

On Wednesday officials found pier 13 of the bridge damaged with a portion of the pillar being eroded. Shanmuga Sundaram ordered that traffic be diverted immediately as the damaged portion could easily crumble under heavy vehicle load.
