Rain likely in Delta and coastal districts

Southern Tamil Nadu can expect good rains over the next 48 hours, with coastal districts also in line for moderate rains and thunderstorms.

Delta districts may also receive rains in the coming week, said weather experts.“Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast now lies over Comorin sea and adjoining Sri Lanka coast between 2.1 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level. 

Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in the State, and light to moderate rain is likely over the interior districts. Coastal districts too will receive moderate rains,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.Heavy rains with thunderstorms are likely in Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Thanjavur districts, and Karaikal over the next 48 hours. 

Moderate rains with thunderstorms are likely along the coastal districts, while the interior districts will receive light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.“Moderate convections are pushing in rain bands from the Bay of Bengal to coastal areas. This will be pushed into the interior areas.As things stand, this is pushing towards southern Tamil Nadu.

Therefore, light rains are expected in north Tamil Nadu,” said weather blogger Srikanth K, who runs the page Chennai Rains.He added that rain will continue in the city, with showers likely in the evenings. Chennai recorded just 0.3 mm in Nungambakkam but 2.6 mm in Meenambakkam, with several areas across the city reporting brief showers all through the day.
