GCC allows parties to check genuineness of over 1.25 lakh Form-6 received in special camps

Political parties have demanded that the Greater Chennai Corporation allow them to check the veracity of the over 1.25 lakh applications received at the special camps alonein the city for inclusion in the electoral list. The civic body heeded to the demand and ordered the officials to show the details to the party representatives.
In a meeting held in Ripon Buildings with the representatives of the political parties,Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash gave assurance that the representatives would be allowed to check the details before finalising the electoral roll of each of the 16 Assembly constituencies.“At the meeting itself, an order was given to the assistant returning officers to show the details of newly added names.
The party representatives opined that they could not remove the fake names from the list once the final electoral list is released. If they are allowed to view the list before finalising, fake names can be removed at the assistant revenue officers level,” a Chennai Corporation official, who had taken part in the meeting said.It may be noted that the civic body received 1,25,010 Form-6 applications to include names in four-day special camps conducted on weekends. Meanwhile, the political parties are allowed to visit the warehouse in Puzhal, wherethe electronic voting machines are stored and inspect the machines. In total, the Chennai Corporation has 10,214 ballot units and 7,810 control units. Of the total machines, 4,320 ballot units and 5,820 control units were brought from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.“The city has only around 3,750 polling booths and each polling booth requires one control unit.
