With all the schools closed since March due to the pandemic, many teachers in government and government-aided schools could not conduct online classes on a par with their counterparts in private institutions due to lack of training in digital teaching tools.

A senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next on Friday that most teachers have inadequate knowledge on handle graphic teaching methods, a must for online teaching. Teachers in more than 6,500 schools across the State will be trained by experts.

Pointing out that students, especially in the science stream, have lots of diagrams and flow-charts in the syllabus, he said, “Though government school teachers are comfortable using blackboards for diagrams, many found it difficult to draw the diagrams using software tools.” Stating that more than one lakh teachers will benefit from the graphic designing course, the official said trainees could choose any time to learn. Explaining the training content, he said, for science teachers, there would be separate online training, on online diagrams, including lab apparatus, experiment images, animals related to Zoology and plants and flow-charts for Botany using various tools.

The official said for other teachers, especially those in social science, history and geography, the training session would be different. “They would be taught how to incorporate history sites, maps and leaders’ picture as part of their lessons in online classes,” he said.
