Remarking that the SC verdict allowing the execution of the eight lane corridor project has disappointed farmers and environmentalists, Stalin, in a statement issued on Tuesday said that though the ruling BJP and AIADMK, which partnered as enemies of farmers, have secured a temporary victory in the pretext of development, the people’s forum would definitely teach a fitting lesson to both the governments through ballots. He also attributed the ‘disappointing’ verdict to the anti-farmer arguments advanced by the AIADMK and BJP governments in the apex court.

Wondering if Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who used police force against farmers to implement the project for ‘commission,’ would come forward to safeguard the interest of farmers, the DMK president said that concern should be expressed in only protecting the rights of farmers and no attempt should be made to implement the project.

Urging the CM to give up the project, Stalin who is also the Leader of Opposition advised the state not to evade the issue by projecting it as a Central government project and said the farmers expect the government to publicly declare that it is cancelling the project.

Earlier, Stalin asked the government to immediately complete the works for covering up the storm water drains on Chennai–Maduravoyal by pass road. Expressing shock and blaming the Centre and state for the death of mother-daughter duo after they fell into an open drain on the bypass a couple of days ago, Stalin said the NHAI did not permit the project conceived in 2018 to cover the open storm water drain. He blamed the AIADMK regime for not making any effort to persuade the Centre to complete the project.

West TN ryots call it ad hoc relief, warn of backlash in polls if project not dropped
Farmers in the western districts got temporary relief after the apex court’s order. Farmers, who were happy over getting some temporary respite, broke into celebrations in Salem district by firing crackers and distributing sweets. They hoped that land titles would come back to them. “Yet, we are disappointed that the project has not been cancelled totally. At least the State government should change its stand and drop the project to save the livelihood of farmers. It should also issue a declaration in its election manifesto in this regard. If not, the farmers will teach a lesson to the AIADMK in the ensuing polls,” said Narayanan, a farmer from Ramalingapuram. Farmers vowed that they would resort to protests if the government commences work.
