Central team inspects Nivar-affected areas in north Chennai, Tiruvallur

With the State witnessing two back-to-back cyclones in two weeks, a team of inter-departmental officials from the Central government inspected areas affected by Cyclone Nivar on Sunday.

The team visited Kosasthalai river in Ennore and obtained information about the course of the river and the damages caused. The team, which split into two, inspected the cyclone affected areas in north Chennai and Tiruvallur.

PWD Secretary S Manivasan, who coordinated with the Central team, explained about the origin and the course of Kosasthalai river and the areas adjoining the river where there were damages. Manivasan also explained the steps taken by the State government for desilting the river and ensuring maximum discharge of water.

Following the inspection in Ennore, the team visited Pudhunagar in Athipattu in Tiruvallur district where the residential areas were inundated because of Nivar where officials explained to the team about the steps taken to pump out stagnated water. The team later visited Neithavoyal village, also in Tiruvallur district, to inspect the damaged banana crops.

The team also visited Pralayampakkam and Andarmadam villages where the bunds of Arni river were washed away and water entered the villages.

The Tamil Nadu government, meanwhile, has also asked the Centre to provide a financial assistance of Rs 3,758 crore for relief and restoration work in the cyclone ‘Nivar’-ravaged districts of the State.
