MNM: Ready to join hands with Superstar

Welcoming actor Rajinikanth’s announcement of launching a political party in January next year to provide an alternative, leaders of Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam did not rule out the possibility of their party joining hands with the former’s proposed party for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

“Our aim is to give alternative and clean politics. If he launches the party with the same intention, we will welcome it. Anybody who also wants to do good to people has the right to start their party. Whether we join hands with him or he will join hands with us is something that will be decided by two leaders (Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth) closer to the elections. There has to be a meeting of minds and a meeting of policies. That is something leadership has to decide,” said a senior leader of MNM.

Interestingly, Haasan told reporters on Tuesday that he would certainly seek the support of Rajinikanth for his party during the election campaign. Now Rajinikanth has announced the launch of his party in January.

The MNM leader, on condition of anonymity, said that in fact, the party has authorised the leader to finalise the alliance on the best interest of the party and he will decide.

“We will have to wait for the formal announcement (of Rajinikanth’s party) and then how it shapes up,” he said. On Rajinikanth’s decision to usher spiritual politics in the state which goes against Haasan’s ideological position, the senior leader of MNM said that Rajinikanth also mentioned that his party would be above the caste and religious politics.

“It is something we have to wait and watch how it shapes out. Only then I think collectively the leader will decide after discussion with all of us. More than anything else they are friends and they do need a channel to discuss all these things. I think it is too premature to comment on whether there would be an alliance or what would be basis for alliance or what if you don’t agree on certain points. All that can come out only after the party is launched and he spells out his policies,” he noted.

Sources in MNM said that Haasan would also start touring the state soon. “When he met the district secretaries in the first week of November, there was a plan for him to visit Coimbatore on November 25 and 26 and Madurai on December 12 and 13 but due to lockdown restrictions, he could not start it. Even now only 200 people are allowed to attend the political meeting, anyway, he will start touring the state soon,” he added.
