Chengalpettu's largest lake, Maduranthakam lake reached its full capacity of 23.3 cubic feet following the continuous rainfall the district received due to the Nivar cyclone.

The lake went past the maximum level of 23.3 cubic feet and reached 23.5 cubic feet on Saturday. The water inflow has been 267 cubic feet and 736 cubic feet of excess water has been released.

The maximum limit of the lake is 696 million cubic feet as opposed to the current level of 700 million cubic feet that the lake has reached. If the water level increases to 1000 million cubic feet the excess water will be released using a shutter. However, as the water inflow has decreased the the Public works Department has assured that it would not be necessary.

Acknowledging the danger of flooding in Kiliyaru, that receives the excess water released from the lake, the PWD and the Revenue Department officers have issued flood warning  to more than 20 villages like Mulli, Munnuthikuppam, Valarpirai, Thatchur that are located near the river through loudspeakers and Tandora. However, the lack of safety measures near the river has encouraged people to approach the river without regarding the dangers.
