Voter verification, WA updates as roll revision picks up

In the backdrop of the Election Commission of India (ECI) fixing January 1, 2021, as the final date for the preparation of voters’ roll, door-to-door verification of voters and corrections in the roll by party workers and poll officials have picked up in Tamil Nadu.

The ECI had also appointed 10 IAS officers in the State to monitor the poll revision works in all the 234 Assembly constituencies. “To monitor the roll revision process, ECI has appointed 10 senior IAS officers as electoral roll observers (EROs). They will monitor the roll revision process in the districts allocated to them and visit the districts at least thrice,” said a public election department official.

Aspiring councillors and former elected representatives have also gone digital this season urging voters to verify their electoral details. Former councillors have formed WhatsApp groups to help voters reach their special camp centres where new forms for inclusion and deletions are available. “Voters roll verification is something important for both the voters and the political parties. We have formed different WhatsApp groups to keep the voters informed about the special camps,” said R Sudhakar, former councillor in Avadi municipality. However, the regular door-to-door campaigns have also been planned by our party in the coming weeks, the DMK functionary said.

According to a notification commissioner of economics and statistics, Atul Anand will be the monitoring officer for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts. Tamil Nadu slum clearance board MD, Kirlosh Kumar will be the monitoring officer for Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Tirupathur and Ranipet districts. Similarly, Tamil Nadu Corporation for development of women Jothi Nirmala will be monitoring officer for Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, the notification read.

Corpn to hold special camp on weekends

The Greater Chennai Corporation will conduct special camps for electoral roll revision on weekends and these would be held at all the polling centres in the city from 10 am to 5 pm on November 21, November 22, December 12 and December 13. “New voters can enroll their names in the list. Address change and other correction can also be done here. Also, applications can be sent to zonal offices before December 15 ,” a Chennai Corporation press release said. Applications should be submitted in person or through www.elections.tn.gov.in. There are 3,754 polling booths at 902 polling centres in the city.
