Q Branch arrests Lankan gangster from Bengaluru

The arrested, Alahapperumaga Sunil Gamini alias Fonseka, 52, is a leading member of Kimbula-ela Guna’s underworld gang operating there. The gang is believed to have close links with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a rebel ethnic group involved in armed struggle in Lanka. “He obtained Indian passport fraudulently after arriving in Tamil Nadu in 2013,” a police official noted. During the initial days, he was living in Puthupakkam. He is believed to have gone underground after his gang got involved in the murder of a police official in Lanka in 2006.

He was living with fake Indian passports and has obtained voter identity cards and ration card in Chengalpattu and in Bengaluru. He kept changing his place of stay to dodge the police. However, based on an intelligence input, Q Branch team arrested him. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a court in Chengalpattu on Tuesday. He has been booked under the Foreigners Act as well, sources said.

While he is not involved in any kind of violent crimes in Tamil Nadu, in Sri Lanka, his gang headed by Kimbula-ela Guna has been allegedly involved in attacks executed by a political leader. He was involved in an attack on then-President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 1999 in which she lost one eye. The gang was allegedly into narcotics smuggling and extortion, police said.
