IIT, NIT aspirants prefer computer science and aerospace engg courses
The admissions process for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) main and advance have reached the key stage, with as the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) that manages the enrolment of the candidates to various IITs and NITs, releasing a detailed counselling schedule. Computer science and aerospace engineering continue to be the most preferred courses for IIT aspirants.

JoSAA 2020 has been set up by the Ministry of Education to manage the joint seat allocation for admissions to 110 institutes for 2020-21 academic year. This includes 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 29 government funded technical institutes. Admissions to these institutes are made through the single platform.
The results of JEE Main and Advanced were declared on September 11 and October 5 respectively, and students’ registration began on October 6. They were given six days to complete admission formalities, including submitting their choice of course and college.
Sources from JoSAA said told DT Next that more than one lakh candidates have enrolled this year, while there are 48,125 undergraduate engineering seats (BTech/BE) available.
An official from the organising committee said about 30 per cent of the candidates, especially those who applied for IITs, opted computer science and engineering, and mechanical and aerospace engineering. Only 8,512 computer science and engineering seats are available while the number of seats available for mechanical and aerospace engineering are even lower at 318.
Two other sought after courses were mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, he added. Also, aeronautical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, chemical engineering, and atmospheric-oceanic science and technology, too, have many takers.
The mock seat allocation would be done for students shortly, he said, adding that provisional round one seat allocation would be declared on October 17. Round two seat allocation would be announced on October 21.
Round 3 and round 4 seat allocation would be announced on October 26 and October 30 respectively. The penultimate round would be published on November 3 and the sixth and final round would be done on November 7. Document verification would be done online once the seat allocation is published.
