Striking down the request by medical students to rescind the policy of mandatory two-year service in government hospitals, Madras HC ruled in favour of the policy.

Earlier, the 276 medical students' had won their case when it came for hearing to a lower court.

State government appealed against this decision to the Madras High Court.

The Bench headed by Justice AP Sahi and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy overruled the previous decision of the lower court.

They ruled that the two-year compulsory service in GH policy by state government is legally valid despite the students citing there is no such rule in the official guidelines handbook of Indian Medical studies.

However the bench said the students could avail their certificates from the respective authorities on failure of getting employed in other private hospitals within two years.
