Soundarajan (70), a resident of Quaid E-Millath Street in Ariyalur, has been running a jewellery shop at Chinna Kadaiveedhi in Ariyalur. Sources said that he had closed the shop after business on Thursday night and went home. On Friday, his neighbouring shop keeper, Ramalingam, who came to open his shop in the morning, found a hole on the wall of the jewellery shop. Soon, Ramalingam passed on the information to Soundarajan, who rushed to his shop. He was shocked to find that 50 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 1.50 lakh in cash missing. Following this, Soundarajan lodged a complaint with the Ariyalur police. A team, led by the DSP Mathan, inspected to the spot and conducted an inquiry. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dog squad were brought to the scene. Further investigation is on.

Meanwhile, a similar attempt was made in another jewellery shop at Senthurai owned by Ravikumar (44) on Thursday late hours.

As the house owner who came out on hearing a strange noise, the miscreants, who had made the attempt, fled from spot.
