The police said that the gang went to the stone quarry in Uthieamurur last Tuesday and attacked the cashier, Ponraj (30), and his helper. The gang then decamped with Rs 8.5 lakh from the quarry. The quarry manager filed a complaint with the Sriperumbudur police station and the police, with the help of the CCTV footages, found there were 11 members in the gang.

On suspicion, the police detained Sharif (28), a former staff in the quarry. During the inquiry, he allegedly confessed that he was the one who planned the robbery along with 10 of his friends in the locality, who lost their jobs in the lockdown. The police said that Sharif, who knows where the money was kept in the office, planned to take it and share it with his friends.

Based on the information from Sharif, the police arrested Sharif, Govardanan (21) of Tiruvallur, Maharaja (23), Abdul Kadar (22) and five others. They also recovered Rs 6.5 lakh from the accused. The police are searching for two others, who are absconding.
