“There are numerous ways in life to succeed and students should develop the mental stamina to face any situation in their lives. I am disheartened at students taking tragic decisions to end their lives,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.

V Vignesh, a 19-year-old student from Ariyalur, who was about to give his third attempt in National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) killed himself on Wednesday, hours before Supreme Court dismissed the plea to postpone the exam for medical courses in India.

The suicide similar to that of Anitha, who was also from Ariyalur, has sent shock waves across the State and the political outcry of banning NEET has once again surfaced in the State. DMK President MK Stalin and PMK leader Ramadoss were the first to condole the suicide and urged the Centre to cancel NEET.

“Future generations should raise their voice against NEET. Is NEET a killer machine,” questioned Ramadoss, in a tweet. Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan, in a tweet, urged the State government to protect the lives of students from NEET.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said that if the State does not accept NEET the government will not dissolve and so the Chief Minister should take a firm decision against NEET.

Earlier, Palaniswami had announced Rs 7 lakh as a solatium for Vignesh’s family, however, Thirumavalavan urged the state government to increase the solatium to Rs 50 lakh. Chief Minister further asked parents of medical aspirants to understand the need of their children and to guide them in the field they desire.
