National Education Policy 2020 which was approved by the Union Cabinet to make transformational reforms in both school and higher education sectors.

The New Policy aims for universalization of education from pre-school to secondary level with 100 % Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030. It is also said that NEP 2020 will bring 2 crores out of school children back into the mainstream through the open schooling system.

The NEP also proposed that by 2030, the minimum degree qualification for teaching will be a 4-year integrated B.Ed. degree.

Mean while Prime Minister Modi  who addressed the Governor's meet held on Monday, September 7, reiterated that NEP 2020 has been framed after many years of labour by a panel led by Dr K Kasturirangan and feedback of more than 2 lakh people, including stakeholders. He said that it was for the first time that everyone was hailing the NEP because everyone ranging from teachers to students and parents were part of the formulation process.

He ensured that the new policy focuses on foundational learning and languages, learning outcomes, and teachers' training.

Even though the Tamil Nadu government has told the Centre that it is not in favour of an entrance exam by the National Testing Agency and institutional restructuring as given in the new National Education Policy 2020, until now the State government has neither opposed nor hailed the NEP completely. In fact, various political parties including DMK, BJP alliance partner PMK and celebrities in the State have expressed their opposition to the NEP.

In a recent update, the TN government has announced that it has commissioned a 13-educational committee to study the pros and cons of the NEP implementation in schools. An similar committee has already been formed to study the NEP feasbility for the higher education in TN.

The State Commissioner of School Education Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan IAS will be heading the 13-member committe, announced TN Government.
