Rules under agri zone act ban non-farm units in Delta region
The state government has made its stand clear to protect the farm sector, especially in Delta region, as one of the key rules framed under the Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act of 2020, clearly prohibits non-agricultural industries in the protected agricultural zones.

Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act, 2020, was enacted with the objective to use the available agricultural lands for sustainable development of agriculture-related activities and ensure that the farm sector’s progress is not constrained by use of lands for non-agricultural or other purposes, said State Agriculture Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, in a Government Order (GO) issued here.
Responding to the series and widespread protest by farmers in delta districts demanding to withdraw the hydrocarbon projects, the state government cancelled the permission granted to all the hydrocarbon projects and in the same heat announced that the Cauvery Delta as a protected agriculture zone.
The Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Developmental Act was passed subsequently in the Legislative Assembly to provide legal stature to the announcement.
After the Act got the Assembly’s approval, rules for the Act were framed to ensure all round development of agriculture in that zone. The rules would ensure development of the protected agricultural zone through integrated farming and enhanced cultivation practices by promoting technologies to increase production and productivity of crops.
It will also ensure optimum usage of water, including food management and other inputs in the field of agriculture. The Act will also promote research and development, including skill-building in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
The department of agriculture, according to the Act, will submit plans on need-based research and development in the field of agriculture, horticulture and allied sectors in consultation with the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.
For effective implementation of the Act, a seven-member technical committee headed by Agriculture Department Secretary will be constituted to assist the government to omit or add any project that falls under the ambit of the Act.
