Unable to register at employment exchange, students left in the lurch
Several lakh students who passed classes 10 and 12 have been left in the lurch by the prevailing pandemic situation, being unable to register their certificates at employment exchanges. The registration usually is done in their respective institutions, but there is no decision yet on when the schools would reopen. Now, senior officials are mulling organising special camps to help these students.

Even in cases where some of the schools, especially the private institutions, are ready to register students’ certificate, delay in the distribution of mark sheets have created yet another obstacle.
Every year, about 80 per cent of the students who pass the board exams would register with employment exchanges through their schools. This year, more than nine lakh Class 10 students were declared pass and about eight lakh Class 12 students cleared the board exams. The 80 per cent of potential registrants as per these numbers works out to about 13.6 lakh students.
A senior official from the Directorate of Employment told DT Next that once the schools reopen, special camps may be organised, especially for Class 12 students who would have gone to college, to register their certificates at their respective institutions.
The pandemic situation has not spared the young job seekers in Tamil Nadu, with more than 65,000 candidates being unable to renew their certificates at the employment exchanges.
The number of persons seeking government jobs has decreased due to the pandemic, as most of them are not able to approach their respective employment exchanges directly to register or renew certificates.
According to the data available with DT Next, the number of persons waiting for government jobs stood at 68.03 lakh in April, which came down to 67.37 lakh by June 30.
An official from the Labour Department said: "Though online renewal option is available on the Employment Directorate portal, many youngsters, especially those from the rural areas who do not have computer or internet connection, have to go to nearest employment exchange in person to renew their certificates."
