    Cases cross 3.5L in State, officials warn of surge in city post e-pass relaxation

    With Tamil Nadu recording a total of 5,795 fresh cases of COVID-19, the tally has crossed the 3.5 lakh mark to reach 3,55,449.

    While Chennai continued its spike and reported 1,186 cases, senior officials from the Health Department said relaxations in the movement of people across the State has contributed to the increased cases in the city and this could see a further surge as the number of returnees are also on the rise.

    Meanwhile, Coimbatore continued to report high cases with 394 new ones on Wednesday followed by Tiruvallur with 393 while Chengalpattu had 315 cases of COVID-19. Several other districts including Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Salem and Theni reported more than 200 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

    A total of 116 deaths were reported in Tamil Nadu, of which 32 were in private hospitals and 84 in government hospitals. Chennai and Coimbatore reported 16 deaths each, on Wednesday. The number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 have been on an increasing trend in Coimbatore. Ranipet reported 10 deaths as well. The Tamil Nadu toll stands at 6,123. Of the total deaths, Chennai accounts for 2,517.

    With 6,384 patients getting discharged from various hospitals, the recoveries outnumbered the new infections. In total, 2,96,171 people have got cured so far and the active cases stood at 53,155, a bulletin issued by the Health Department said. As many as 67,720 samples were tested and cumulatively 39,13,523 specimens have been examined in the state so far.
