An advocate of the BJP on Monday made a mention before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking permission to install idols of Lord Ganesha as part of Vinayaga Chathurthi celebrations on August 22.

When advocate Ramasamy made a mention, a Division Bench of Justices M Sathyanaraynan and P Rajamanickam agreed to hear the matter if it was filed in the form of a petition.
In his submission, the petitioner cited the Tamil Nadu government order prohibiting installation of idols of Lord Ganesha in public places citing coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown to prevent spread of the virus. The government also banned taking out processions and rallies and immersing the idols in the sea and other waterbodies.
He pointed out that no other state has imposed such a restriction and only it was banned in Tamil Nadu and sought a direction to permit installation of idols in public places by adhering to all safety norms and other precautionary measures. The petitioner also sought to quash the Government Order banning installation of idols, processions and immersion of idols in waterbodies. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Kaivinai Kagithakuuzh Vinayagar Silaigal Matrum Kaliman Bommaigal Thayripargla Sangam has moved the Madras High court seeking to direct the government to allow installation of Vinayaga idols in public places.
